Most states operate under traditional tort state auto insurance law. In tort systems, individuals can go to court to receive damages when they’re injured or when their property is damaged by a driver. The logic behind this type of system is that the at-fault party should have to pay, but tort systems have some serious problems, not the least of which is the high cost of litigation. Some states like Florida have adopted no fault state auto insurance law.

Buying auto insurance online can be extremely beneficial, as it’s often possible to find much lower prices on policies with great coverage. However, this isn’t always the case. A policy with a high deductible or extremely low coverage limits can be nearly worthless, so before shopping, drivers should know how to properly choose insurance coverage.

A questionable auto insurance claim is one in which the information doesn’t seem to make sense. These are flagged by insurance companies who will further investigate the claim. Additionally, state fraud agencies will launch investigations into alleged fraud. California leads the nation with questionable claims. In second place comes Florida, having passed Texas in 2010. States like Florida are especially troubled by insurance fraud because of their no-fault laws. Other states with no-fault laws in place are Michigan and New York. Because of these systems, those states also top the list for cost of insurance.
