How many auto accident fatalities can be attributed to alcohol?
The numbers have shifted slightly but the percentage of alcohol impaired drivers involved in fatal crashes has stayed pretty steady at between 31% and 32%.
Below are the statistics for the last five years as published by the Fatality Analysis Report System (FARS) in connection with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):

Penalties for DUI are severe and getting more onerous as each state fights to discourage this deadly practice.
