Gleaming pumpkin 32 years in the making

This story begins like thousands of others around North America. A guy begins a restoration project, then life gets in the way and the project gets put on the back burner. That is code for being stuck in the back of the garage and having stuff piled on top of it.

For Mark Bard, the story began in 1979 when he began restoring the 1970 Mustang Mach1 you see above. It got stuck in the corner just a year later. In 2006, work finally resumed on the project, which was finally completed this year. 2011.

32 years later!

They say that good things come to those who wait and Marks Mach1 is a very good thing.

This Mustang is an interesting combination of old meets new, as one can see that special attention has been paid to keeping the Seventies flavor, while adding in some modern touches. That begins on the surface, as the car is painted orange, just like the Trans Am cars back in the day. The twist is that this is a pearl orange that glimmers in the light. The car wears American Racing 5 spoke wheels reminiscent of the ones those T/A cars used too.

The wicked looking side exit exhaust however would look more traditional on a funny car, but they are insanely cool on a Mustang. Another modern touch is the air ride suspension that allows for the super low posture and makes the fat Mickey Thompsons look all the more evil. The rare white interior has been kept more or less original.

Up front, things get really wild. Unlike many car owners who opt for a new crate engine, Bard chose to stay with a 351. To make things extreme, a Paxton supercharger was mounted along with a Demon carb. The combination produces a whopping 709 horsepower at 12 psi of boost.

Beyond creating an incredible cruiser, what Mark Bard has done is prove that there are still some gems hiding in garages across the continent just waiting to be brought back into the daylight.
