Does Alabama verify car insurance?
On 6-21-11, the Governor, Robert Bentley, signed legislation that will establish a car insurance coverage verification database in the state. It gives police and other government officials access to online information about the coverage status of state residents. It also makes verification of car insurance a necessary step during the vehicle registration process. It will be completely operational in 2013.
This was in response to an Insurance Research Council report that an estimated 20% of Alabama’s drivers drive without insurance—the sixth highest in the nation.
In Alabama, drivers who are caught driving uninsured are subject to paying hundreds of dollars in fines. If they are in an accident, they might have to pay all of the damages they cause.
